LED lighting cost calculator questions
How is LED lighting electricity cost calculated?
The calculator multiplies the total connected lighting load in kilowatts by annual operating hours. It then applies any entered controls or usage reduction. The resulting annual energy consumption in kilowatt-hours is multiplied by the electricity cost per kWh.
How much energy can LED lighting save?
Savings depend on the quantity and system wattage of the existing and proposed fixtures, their operating schedules and any controls reduction. The calculator compares these entered values rather than applying a generic LED savings percentage.
What wattage should I enter for a fixture with a driver?
Enter the complete system input wattage whenever it is available, including driver losses when these are included in the published system rating. Do not use an incandescent-equivalent wattage or the LED-chip rating when the complete luminaire consumes a different amount. For LED-strip systems, use the LED Strip Driver & Cable Calculator to size the power supply separately.
How do I combine utility and generator electricity rates?
Professional mode accepts up to three energy sources, each with a cost per kWh and percentage share of annual lighting energy. The shares must total 100%. The calculator then produces a weighted effective electricity rate for the comparison.
Does lower LED wattage guarantee the same light output?
No. Wattage measures electrical power, while lumens describe total listed light output. Beam angle, distribution, mounting height, fixture placement, glare and room conditions determine how much useful light reaches the required area. Do sensors and dimming reduce connected load?
Sensors, scheduling and dimming can reduce energy consumed during operation, but they do not remove installed electrical load. The calculator therefore reports connected load before controls and operating energy after the entered controls reduction.
What is the difference between simple payback, ROI and NPV?
Simple payback estimates how long first-year operating savings take to recover the net project cost. ROI compares cumulative net benefit with the initial net project cost over the selected study period. NPV discounts future annual savings using the entered discount rate.
Is an LED L70 value the lifetime of the complete fixture?
No. L70 describes projected lumen maintenance of the LED source under defined conditions. Drivers, controls, thermal conditions and other components can affect the service life and maintenance cost of the complete luminaire.
