A dressing room can appear bright while still making it difficult to distinguish clothing colours, see into wardrobes or view yourself comfortably in the mirror.
The problem is usually not a lack of light. It is where the light comes from, which surfaces it reaches and how it interacts with mirrors, cabinetry and the person using the space.
Effective dressing-room lighting combines comfortable room illumination, balanced light around the mirror and carefully positioned lighting inside wardrobes. It should reveal colours and textures accurately without producing harsh facial shadows, distracting reflections or visible LED dots.

1. Start With What the Lighting Must Reveal
Dressing-room lighting serves several related but different purposes.
It should allow you to:
- Identify clothing colours and materials
- Coordinate garments and accessories
- See your face and clothing clearly in the mirror
- Find items inside shelves and drawers
- Move through the room safely
- Use a dressing table for grooming or makeup
- Appreciate decorative cabinetry and displayed items
These tasks do not all take place on the same surface.
Ceiling lights mainly illuminate horizontal surfaces such as floors and countertops. Mirrors, faces and hanging clothes are vertical. Shelves and drawers may be hidden beneath other cabinet sections.
A lighting plan that considers only the floor area can therefore produce an acceptable lux reading while leaving the most important surfaces poorly illuminated.
Begin by identifying what needs to be seen, where the person will stand and which direction the light must travel.
2. Plan From the Furniture and Wardrobe Layout
The lighting layout should follow the wardrobe elevations and furniture plan—not an empty ceiling grid.
Before selecting fixtures, mark:
- Full-height wardrobes
- Hanging sections
- Shelves and shoe storage
- Drawers and accessory compartments
- Mirror positions
- Dressing tables or islands
- Normal standing and seated positions
- Cabinet-door movement
- Circulation routes
- Windows and daylight direction
- Available locations for drivers and controls
A row of downlights placed through the centre of the ceiling may illuminate the floor effectively but leave the person standing between the light and the wardrobe. Their body then casts a shadow over the clothing they are trying to view.
The same problem occurs at mirrors. If the only light is directly overhead, the face may receive uneven illumination even when the room feels bright.
Develop the furniture and lighting layouts together so that each luminaire has a defined purpose.
3. Divide the Dressing Room Into Lighting Zones
Treating the entire room as one uniformly illuminated area usually produces a flat result and limits control.
A dressing room can be divided into several practical zones:

These zones can use separate circuits or controls. This allows the mirror, wardrobes and general lighting to operate independently instead of switching the entire room on for every task.
4. Use Lux Levels as Practical Starting Points
Lux measures the amount of light reaching a surface. It is useful for estimating whether an area receives enough light, but it does not explain the direction, comfort or colour quality of that light.
The following ranges are practical starting points:

These targets should be adjusted according to the room and the user. Dark timber, black cabinetry and densely packed clothing absorb more light than pale finishes. Older users or detailed grooming tasks may benefit from higher, well-controlled illumination.
The direction of measurement also matters. Floor and tabletop lighting are assessed on horizontal planes, while faces, mirrors and hanging clothes require useful light on vertical planes.
A high reading on the floor does not guarantee that the face or clothing will be illuminated properly.

5. Build the Design With Three Lighting Layers
A successful dressing room normally combines three main layers.
Ambient lighting
Ambient lighting provides the comfortable background level needed to understand and move through the room. It may come from recessed downlights, surface-mounted luminaires, indirect lighting or a decorative ceiling fixture.
It should make the room feel balanced without becoming the only source of useful light.
Mirror and dressing lighting
This layer directs light toward the person. It helps reveal the face, clothing and full-body appearance without relying entirely on overhead illumination.
Balanced vertical lighting is particularly important where the mirror is used for grooming, makeup or evaluating clothing colours.
Wardrobe lighting
Integrated lighting makes hanging clothes, shelves, drawers and accessories easier to see. It can also give fitted furniture a cleaner and more refined appearance.
Wardrobe lighting should supplement the room lighting. It should not be expected to illuminate the person or replace a properly designed mirror-lighting layer.
A fourth decorative or accent layer can be added where selected bags, shoes, artwork or cabinet finishes should receive greater visual emphasis.

6. Light the Dressing Mirror From the Front and Sides
The most common mirror-lighting mistake is relying on a downlight directly above the person.
Overhead light can produce shadows beneath the eyes, nose, cheekbones and chin. It may also illuminate the top of the head more strongly than the face.
A more balanced arrangement uses diffused light from both sides of the mirror. This distributes light across the face and reduces harsh modelling.
Effective options include:
- Vertical luminaires positioned on both sides of the mirror
- Integrated diffused lighting along the mirror’s side edges
- A broad frontal source above the mirror combined with side lighting
- A large luminous mirror with controlled forward light
- Adjustable lighting that can be tested from the actual viewing position
Side lighting should be positioned approximately around face height and extended vertically enough to serve users of different heights.
Top lighting can still contribute, but it should support the side or frontal light rather than act as the only source.
For a full-length mirror, the lighting should reveal both the face and the clothing. A short light concentrated around head height may work for grooming but leave the lower body noticeably darker.
7. Control Glare and Mirror Reflections
Mirrors can turn a well-intended luminaire into a visible source of glare.
Whether a light appears in the mirror depends on three positions:
- The luminaire
- The mirror
- The person viewing it
Common problems include:
- Ceiling downlights reflected directly above the person
- Spotlights aimed toward the mirror
- Decorative pendants appearing as bright points behind the user
- LED strips reflected as dotted lines
- Glossy cabinet doors multiplying visible sources
- Backlit mirrors creating a bright outline while leaving the face comparatively dark
Backlighting can create an attractive decorative effect, but it primarily illuminates the wall behind the mirror. It should not be treated automatically as sufficient facial lighting.
Choose shielded or diffused luminaires and test them from the normal standing and seated positions. A fixture that seems comfortable when viewed from the room entrance may become distracting when seen through the mirror.
The goal is not to eliminate every reflection. It is to prevent exposed sources from competing with the person’s reflection or reducing visual comfort.

8. Choose a Suitable Colour Temperature
Colour temperature affects both atmosphere and the appearance of clothing, skin and finishes.
2700K
This creates a warm, decorative atmosphere. It can suit bedrooms and luxurious dressing areas, but it may make whites, cool greys and some fabrics appear warmer than they do under neutral light.
3000K
This is a comfortable residential choice that works well with timber, warm metals, fabrics and bedroom interiors. It provides a warmer character without becoming as visually yellow as lower colour temperatures.
3500K
Where available, 3500K can provide a useful balance between residential warmth and neutral colour appearance.
4000K
This produces a clearer, more neutral appearance and can work well in highly functional dressing rooms, wardrobes and grooming areas. It should still be controlled carefully to avoid making the room feel overly clinical.
Tunable white
Tunable-white lighting allows the colour appearance to change. It can help users compare clothing under warmer and cooler conditions or create different daytime and evening scenes.
Whichever colour temperature is selected, maintain consistency between the ceiling, mirror and wardrobe lighting. A 3000K mirror beside a visibly cooler wardrobe strip can make the room feel uncoordinated and complicate colour comparison.

9. Prioritise Colour Rendering and Consistency
Dressing rooms are colour-sensitive spaces.
The lighting affects how we perceive:
- Skin tones
- Clothing combinations
- White, black and neutral fabrics
- Red and warm-coloured materials
- Leather and timber
- Jewellery and metallic finishes
- Makeup and cosmetics
As a practical starting point, consider CRI 90 or higher around mirrors and clothing. Where detailed colour information is available, strong red rendering can also help skin tones, warm fabrics and cosmetics appear more natural.
Colour consistency between luminaires is equally important. Two products can both be labelled 3000K yet appear slightly different when installed beside one another. One may look greener, pinker, warmer or cooler.
This becomes especially noticeable when LED profiles run in parallel or when the mirror, ceiling and wardrobe use visibly different LED sources.
Compare samples where possible and keep closely related lighting within a consistent specification.

10. Illuminate Hanging Clothes From the Front
Lighting installed too far inside a wardrobe often illuminates the back panel more effectively than the clothing.
Hanging garments create depth and shadows. When the light comes only from the top rear, the rail, shelf and garments can block it before it reaches the clothing fronts.
Better positions may include:
- Vertical LED profiles along the front sides of the wardrobe
- A horizontal profile near the front of the upper shelf
- Shielded light directed downward and slightly toward the clothing
- Integrated lighting positioned in front of the hanging rail
The exact position depends on the wardrobe construction, door system and profile design.
Vertical lighting on both sides can provide even coverage across full-height garments. A single vertical strip may be sufficient in narrower sections, although the opposite side may receive less light.
For horizontal lighting, position the profile close enough to the front to reach the garments without becoming directly visible to the user.
Always test the wardrobe with clothing installed. An empty cabinet reflects more light and may appear significantly brighter than the finished wardrobe.
11. Plan Shelves, Drawers and Shoe Storage Separately
Different storage sections create different shadow patterns.
Shelves
Place the light near the front edge so that the shelf above does not block it. If the strip is installed too far back, the rear panel may glow while objects at the front remain silhouetted.
Drawers
Drawer lighting should become useful when the drawer is open. Depending on the cabinetry, this may come from a profile above the drawer bank or an integrated sensor-controlled source.
Confirm that the light is not blocked by the drawer front or directed into the user’s eyes.
Shoe storage
Low-level linear lighting can make shelves easier to use and add visual depth. Shield the source carefully, particularly when the shelves are below eye level and viewed from above.
Bags and accessories
Display sections can use slightly stronger accent lighting, but every compartment does not need the same brightness. Selective emphasis creates a calmer and more organised appearance.
Jewellery
Jewellery requires clear colour rendering and controlled reflections. Broad, diffused light is generally more comfortable than a small, intense point source reflected from polished metal or glass.
12. Treat the LED Strip, Profile and Diffuser as One System
An LED strip should not be selected independently from its profile, diffuser, driver and installation location.
LED strip
Check:
- Operating voltage
- Wattage per metre
- Light output per metre
- Colour temperature
- CRI and colour consistency
- Maximum recommended run length
- Dimming compatibility
Aluminum profile
The profile creates a mounting surface, helps manage heat and supports the diffuser. Its depth and shape influence whether individual LED points remain visible.
Diffuser
A diffuser softens the light and protects the strip. Greater diffusion can create a more continuous line, although it may also reduce the amount of light transmitted.
COB and SMD strips
COB strips use closely spaced chips and can create a smoother line of light in shallow or visible installations.
Traditional SMD strips can also perform well when the LED spacing, profile depth and diffuser are correctly coordinated. A shallow profile with widely spaced LEDs is more likely to reveal individual points.
The complete assembly should be tested before the cabinetry is finished, especially where the light source or its reflection may remain visible.

13. Make Drivers, Wiring and Sensors Accessible
Wardrobe lighting should be electrically planned before the cabinetry is manufactured or installed.
Confirm:
- Where each cable enters the furniture
- Where connections will be made
- Which sections operate together
- Whether dimming is required
- Which doors or drawers use sensors
- Where the driver will be installed
- How the driver can be inspected or replaced
- Whether long runs require additional power feeds
The strip voltage and driver output voltage must match. The driver must also have enough usable capacity for the connected load without being selected only at the exact calculated wattage.
Long cable or strip runs can suffer from voltage drop, causing reduced brightness or a colour shift toward the end. Cable size, run length, total current and power-feed arrangement should therefore be considered together.
Drivers should remain ventilated and accessible. Do not permanently seal them inside finished cabinetry or an unreachable ceiling void.
Door sensors can make wardrobe lighting convenient, while motion sensors may suit walk-in spaces. Their detection zones should be tested so that lights do not activate unnecessarily whenever someone passes nearby.
14. Coordinate the Lighting With Cabinet Materials
Cabinet finishes strongly influence how much light the dressing room appears to have.
Dark wood and dark laminates
These absorb more light and may require stronger or more closely spaced illumination.
White and pale interiors
These reflect light effectively and can appear brighter with lower output.
Glossy lacquer
Glossy finishes can reveal reflections and bright LED points. Wider diffusers and careful shielding become particularly important.
Mirror and glass
These can multiply visible sources and create unexpected reflections. Test the viewing angles before fixing the profiles permanently.
Textured finishes
Controlled light from an angle can reveal texture, but very close grazing may exaggerate joints, uneven surfaces or installation imperfections.
Metallic finishes
Polished handles, rails and accessories can produce sharp highlights. Diffused lighting generally creates a more refined result than exposed LEDs.
A sample cabinet section should ideally be tested using the actual interior finish, profile, diffuser, LED specification and representative clothing.
15. Create Controls for Real Dressing-Room Use
Separate controls make the room more comfortable and reduce the need to operate every light at full output.
Useful control groups include:
- General ceiling lighting
- Mirror lighting
- Wardrobe interiors
- Dressing-table lighting
- Decorative or display lighting
- Cleaning and maintenance lighting
These groups can support several practical scenes.
Everyday dressing
Balanced mirror light, wardrobe lighting and comfortable ambient illumination.
Grooming and makeup
Stronger, even facial lighting with accurate colour rendering.
Evening
Lower ambient output with warmer visual character and restrained wardrobe lighting.
Wardrobe access
Cabinet lighting activated by doors, local switches or sensors without illuminating the complete room.
Cleaning
Higher and more uniform output for inspecting shelves, floors and cabinet surfaces.
If dimming is used, the LED strip, lamp or luminaire, driver and control device must all support the same dimming method. A product being described as dimmable does not guarantee compatibility with every dimmer.
Test the lowest useful dimming level for flicker, instability, uneven output and sudden switch-off.
16. Test the Completed Installation
Lighting should be commissioned with the wardrobe filled and the room arranged as it will actually be used.
Check the mirror from every normal viewing position. Open doors and drawers, inspect each storage section and test the lighting during both daytime and evening conditions.
Before approving the installation, confirm that:
- The face receives balanced frontal or side illumination
- Harsh overhead facial shadows are controlled
- Bright luminaires are not distracting in the mirror
- Clothing colours appear natural
- The colour temperature remains consistent
- Hanging clothes are illuminated from the front
- Shelves do not block the light below them
- Drawers receive useful light when opened
- LED points are not visible where a continuous line is intended
- Profiles and cables are securely concealed
- Drivers remain accessible and ventilated
- Sensors respond to the correct doors or movements
- Long LED-strip runs remain consistent from beginning to end
- Cabinet doors and hardware do not strike the luminaires
- Dimming remains smooth at low levels
- Every control group is clearly identified
- The installation can be cleaned and maintained
Bringing the Dressing Room Together
Good dressing-room lighting is not created by adding more ceiling fixtures.
It comes from placing the right type of light on the person, the mirror and the contents of the wardrobe. Ambient lighting establishes comfort, balanced vertical light reveals the face and clothing, and integrated linear lighting makes storage sections practical to use.
Begin with the furniture layout, separate the lighting into functional zones and coordinate the LED strips, profiles, diffusers, drivers and controls as one system. Then test the completed space with real clothing, reflective surfaces and the people who will use it.
